Instead, he discovers that some memories—and dangers—cannot be escaped.
After joining the Tampa Police Department, Archer quickly reestablishes himself as a relentless investigator with sharp instincts and a willingness to bend protocol when lives are at stake. A series of gun-store robberies initially appears to be routine criminal activity, but the investigation soon exposes a far greater threat: the activation of a Taliban sleeper cell preparing an attack on American soil.
As the clock runs down, Archer becomes the personal target of Saif Abdulla, an Afghan national shaped by devastating loss after his village was destroyed during Operation Enduring Freedom.Their confrontation reveals two men scarred by violence, each struggling with the consequences of tragedy from opposite sides of a conflict.
Rather than approaching the story as a conventional terrorism thriller, Hoffman examines the lasting psychological effects of violence on victims, perpetrators, families, and communities. The novel explores the lasting effects of PTSD, the nightmares and gallows humor that often accompany trauma, the toll of police work on personal relationships, and how tragedy and ideological manipulation can drive individuals toward radicalization.
Hoffman began his NYPD career in 1984 as a uniformed officer in Brooklyn North before advancing to Brooklyn North Narcotics, the Organized Crime Investigation Division, and theFederal HIDTA Task Force. His firsthand knowledge gives the novel’s investigative procedures, police culture, and emotional stakes a powerful sense of authenticity.
A SAG-AFTRA member since 2000, Hoffman has also appeared in productions including Law &Order, The Sopranos, Life on Mars, The Taking of Pelham 123, and A Beautiful Mind.
