December 2025 - Imagine flipping a picture book over to discover the same story told from a completely different perspective. That’s the magic of Unlikely Friends Indeed, the debut children’s book by Jana Haertl, illustrated by Hilary Mills Lambert. This one-of-a-kind book not only delivers a heartwarming tale about friendship and acceptance but also invites children to physically turn the book in their hands - an interactive reading experience that mirrors the dogs’ journey toward understanding each other.
Based on real-life dogs, the story follows Buddy, a sweet pup losing his eyesight, and Bella, a high-strung former show dog trying to adapt to everyday life. When the two are adopted into the same family, misunderstandings and misadventures abound. But as their journeys intertwine, Buddy and Bella discover that friendship grows strongest when built on empathy, respect, and acceptance.
What sets Unlikely Friends Indeed apart is its innovative two-sided design. Buddy’s story unfolds from one side, while Bella’s story begins on the flip side. The narratives meet in the middle - just as the dogs’ friendship does - creating an engaging and memorable reading experience for children ages 3 - 10.
“I wanted to honor the lives of my two dogs, who had such different challenges but ultimately learned to support one another,” says Haertl. “When they both passed away within a year of each other, I knew their story could inspire children to see that differences aren’t obstacles - they’re opportunities for connection.”
Haertl brings decades of experience as an educational volunteer, marketing writer, and lifelong book lover, exuding warmth and authenticity in her storytelling. Hilary Mills Lambert draws from her creative background at Sesame Street and years of teaching art, bringing Buddy and Bella to life with expressive, colorful artwork that captures both their personalities and emotions.
With its themes of overcoming disabilities, easing anxiety, heeding water safety, embracing differences, and fostering emotional resilience, Unlikely Friends Indeed resonates not only with young readers but also with parents, teachers, psychologists, and librarians seeking meaningful stories to help children navigate challenges and spark meaningful conversations. Animal lovers will also be touched by the true story that inspired the book.
“Children who may feel afraid, different, or uncertain can see themselves in Buddy and Bella,” Haertl explains. “It’s a story that says: you are not alone, and friendship can make you stronger."
