The idea for A Guinea Pig in the Wild began in Simran’s own Scottsdale backyard. On a hotsummer day in 2021, her guinea pig, Cookie, escaped through a hole in the fence. Simran andher family feared that he would be unable to survive the heat and dangers of the wild. Then, just before sunset, Cookie miraculously appeared back in her yard.
Cookie’s mysterious day away inspired Simran to imagine the animals he might have met, the places he might have explored, and the adventures he might have experienced before finding his way home.
Simran enjoys learning about animals—especially guinea pigs—and thinking about how they experience the world around them. Through Cookie’s story, she hopes to encourage curiosity, creativity, compassion for animals, and a sense of adventure in every child who reads the book. The story incorporates animals native to Arizona, giving young readers a playful introduction to the wildlife and natural environment of the region.
