FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 2025 — Author Susan Tigert announces the release of her debut novel, Streams in the Wasteland, a captivating historical fiction story that blends mystery, romance, and poignant reflections on faith, trials, and personal growth.
Set in 1909 Macon, Georgia, Streams in the Wasteland follows Ellison (Ella) Clark, a bold young woman from a wealthy family, who dreams of becoming a doctor—a rare and controversial aspiration for women of the time. Against the backdrop of societal expectations and the elegant yet restrictive world of balls and gowns, Ella’s journey leads her to confront love, betrayal, and the heavy burdens of guilt and shame. As she grapples with the conflicting demands of two very different suitors—Jasper Tillman, a wealthy and egocentric man who demands her hand in marriage, and William Thompson, a kind-hearted man who wants only her happiness—Ella must navigate the darkness and find her path to redemption.
Inspired by the author’s experiences walking the grounds of an all-female university in Macon, the novel weaves historical accuracy with timeless themes of resilience and hope. Tigert’s passion for literature and deep Christian faith are evident in every page, as she offers readers a story of a woman’s strength in the face of adversity, the healing power of love, and the unwavering grace that can be found in the most unexpected places.
“While writing this novel, I wanted to provide a voice of encouragement for those who may find themselves in dark times, who have always found solace in literature and writing. “Although the characters are fictional, I hope their struggles and triumphs resonate with readers, as a reminder that there is always a way forward, even in the most challenging circumstances.”

In addition to its compelling narrative, Streams in the Wasteland is enriched by Tigert’s extensive research into the architectural marvels of the time, with the story featuring two houses in the fictional world. The Hay House in Macon, Georgia, a magnificent structure that offers readers a glimpse into the opulence of the early 20th century, while the boarding house where Ella stays is inspired by the historic Hall House in Salisbury, North Carolina. Tigert encourages readers to visit both houses to fully immerse themselves in the world her characters inhabit.
Susan Tigert, EdD, resides in North Carolina with her husband and three children. When not writing, she enjoys traveling and experiencing the world around her.
