Author Denise Gard releases a haunting and emotionally resonant story inspired by real-life tragedy
Award-winning storyteller and performer Denise Gard returns with her second novel, When The Rooster Crows, a gripping work of literary fiction that examines the fragile line between grief and madness—and the hope that can still be found in the darkest corners of loss.
Gard, who knew she wanted to write from the time she was eight years old, has spent her life blending storytelling and performance. From acting in dinner theaters to serving as a children’s specialist in a public library, she eventually forged a unique career as a professional storyteller. With the help of her trained Border Collies, Joey and Kira, she performs for schools, libraries, and senior communities, drawing inspiration from the people and stories she encounters. Her debut novel, Raven Woods: Smoke Signals, was born from her experiences with seniors and the devastating 2013 wildfire that struck her Colorado community. When The Rooster Crows continues this deeply personal tradition.
The novel follows Dante, a man consumed by thoughts of “if only” and “what if” after the disappearance of the woman he loves, Lyra. Tormented by guilt and uncertainty, Dante is admitted to a state hospital, where he meets Dr. Montgomery, a grieving psychiatrist who has lost his wife and is searching for purpose. As their lives intertwine, both men must confront the terrifying possibility that hope can be as destructive as it is sustaining. When the symbolic rooster crows, each must decide what it means—and what truths they are finally ready to face.
Gard was inspired by the 2023 Lahaina, Hawaii fire, where many families were left without answers and clung to the smallest glimmer of possibility. Combined with her own community’s experiences with Colorado wildfires, the novel delves into the emotional turmoil experienced by survivors caught between hope and despair.
When The Rooster Crows is ideal for book clubs—complete with discussion questions—as well as readers who enjoy psychological fiction, literary fiction, and stories that explore the human mind under extreme emotional pressure.
